John Hanson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, Urban Studies
and Economics from the University of Toronto, a Masters of Arts
Degree in Art History from Rutgers University, and a Doctor of
Philosophy in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art
of the University of London. He teaches courses in ancient, medieval
and Islamic art. His research interests include Byzantine decorative
arts, especially ivory carving, and new forms of iconography in
the twelfth century, as tied to developments in philosophy, religion,
and literature. After completing his Ph.D., he taught for four
years at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, before joining Hope
College in 2001 as Assistant Professor of Art History and Director
of the De Pree Gallery.
