Looks can be deceiving. There are things to do and see in the Holland area which will provide enriching experiences for your blossoming artistic sensibility. You’ll need a car to reach some of the places
listed below. Talk a Business major friend into taking you—it will be good for them.

Museums:
Holland Area Arts Council Located at 150 E. 8th St., HAAC has a growing program and a regular exhibition calendar. Stop in once a month. You can also gain experience working as a volunteer or earn credit in an internship. Easy walk.
The Holland Museum Located at 31 W. 10th St. Varying exhibitions, and a good internship possibility. Easy walk.
The Nines Gallery 17 W. 10th St. Quality commercial gallery, sometimes features work by Hope professors and grads. Easy walk.
Muskegon Museum of Art 296 W. Webster Ave., Muskegon. (North on 31). Regular exhibition calendar, which sometimes features some of Hope’s own. Internship possibilities. Road trip.
Grand Rapids Art Museum 155 Division North, Grand Rapids. (North on 196). Internship possibilities. Road trip.
Urban Institute for Contemporary Art 88 Monroe Ave. NW, Grand Rapids. More avant-garde than the others! Internship possibilities. Road trip.

Areas of Interest:
Saugatuck/Douglas (South on 31) There are a dozen galleries in the area and also a very groovy historical museum at the base of Mount Baldhead on the Kalamazoo River. The museum is open just through October, so take a road trip in the fall. It’s beautiful. Check this area out and have lunch! You’ll love it!
Around Campus Attend openings in the DePree Gallery. It insures that you won’t miss any exhibitions and it’s a good excuse to get dressed up (no, you don’t have to), eat, drink, mingle and possibly meet the artists. Show your solidarity for the arts in general and attend productions by the Theatre, Music and Dance Departments! The literary organization Opus sponsors frequent poetry readings, often held in the gallery. One of the great advantages of a small, liberal arts college is that you can have contact with all of the arts; so do it.

Other Entertainment:
Holland 7 Theatre Located on Waverly Road (near Meijer). Features an art film series—but don’t delay if they’re showing an art film you want to see, because they don’t stay there long!
Star Theater Off 120th, behind the Outlet Mall.
Knickerbocker Theatre Property of Hope College, located on 8th Street. The Knickerbocker hosts a variety of College-sponsored events, dramatic, musical, terpsichorean and cinematic. Easy walk.

Don’t forget to pay attention to Hope College’s Great Performance Series, as well as the Theater, Music, and Dance Departments’ offerings. The English department’s Visiting Writers Series draws several highly acclaimed and interesting writers each year. Participating in and enjoying other art forms will no doubt stimulate your own.

Grand Rapids and Saugatuck If you have transportation provide plenty of additional opportunities for entertainment, such as foreign and art films, exhibits, concerts, coffee shops, and restaurants.

Don’t underestimate kitsch and other cultural phenomena! Visit Dutch Village, go bowling or play miniature golf.
